Guidelines for exclusionary time-out.

1. Teachers should be aware of, and adhere to, local and state policies regarding time-out.

2. Written procedures for the use of time-out should be developed, and each teacher should have a copy. Parents and students must be informed of the possible use of time-out, of the procedures, and of behaviors that will lead to its use.

3. Written permission from parents should be obtained indicating informed consent.

4. According to both case law and the 1997 reauthorization of IDEA, the IEP committee should be involved in making decisions concerning the use of behavior reduction procedures such as time-out.
